Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews resumed skating prior to Tuesday’s game against the St. Louis Blues. Matthews is currently on injured reserve after suffering a lower-body injury against the Boston Bruins on November 11, and is not expected to return for Thursday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Here is a video of Matthews skating, obtained by TSN’s Mark Masters:
Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube told reporters Monday that Matthews hadn’t skated since sustaining his injury.
Matthews recorded nine goals and 14 points in 17 games this season. The 28-year-old missed 15 games last season due to a lingering upper-body injury which affected his shot velocity and location.
Joseph Woll is the projected starter for Tuesday’s game. Woll made his season debut during Saturday’s loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, making 29 saves. Dennis Hildeby will operate as Woll’s backup.
Berube confirmed that Nicolas Roy will be ruled out for a ‘couple of games’ after Tuesday’s morning skate. Jacob Quillan will make his season debut, and Berube is enthusiastic about the 23-year-old’s pace and positional versatility.
“Q, he’s got great speed. He’s fast, he’s powerful for a young kid,” Berube said. “He’s going to bring energy to the game. He’s going to work. He’s going to compete, that’s what he’s going to bring to the game tonight.”
Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving held his quarterly press conference, where he took responsibility for the team’s 8-9-2 start. Treliving provided head coach Craig Berube with a vote of confidence, while expressing his desire to constantly upgrade the roster.
“Yeah, I’ve got all the faith in our coach right now, so I don’t look at that as the issue. My job right now is to support our coach, support his message, support our group,” Treliving said of Berube.
Chris Tanev also resumed skating. Tanev is on injured reserve and will be out indefinitely as he recovers from an upper-body injury sustained against the Philadelphia Flyers on November 1.
