Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube was demonstrative in his instruction during Monday’s practice, stopping drills several times to make sure the message was received.
Berube shuffled the lines again, partly out of necessity. Nicolas Roy was absent from Monday’s practice, and Berube confirmed that Roy will miss Tuesday’s game against the St. Louis Blues with an upper-body injury.
Scott Laughton skated in a regular practice jersey, but will not be available for Tuesday’s game. Berube also confirmed that Auston Matthews hasn’t skated since being sustaining a lower-body injury against the Boston Bruins during a November 11 game.
Brandon Carlo was placed on injured reserve retroactive to November 13 prior to Monday’s practice, and the team called up forward Jacob Quillan from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. Berube did not provide a timeline for Carlo’s return.
Quillan recorded two goals and 14 points in 14 games with the Marlies, and was placed alongside Matias Maccelli and Bobby McMann during Monday’s practice.
Troy Stecher made his first appearance with the team, after being claimed off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. Stecher wore No. 28 and practiced alongside Dakota Mermis, then lead the team stretch to conclude the formal session. Following practice, the 31-year-old spoke candidly about the new opportunity that presents itself with the Maple Leafs.
“Good guy, a solid guy,” Berube said of Stecher. “Character stands out to me, effort. I thought he had a good practice today. He plays hard. He’s a compete guy. He competes on everything and plays a pretty simple game.”
“Excited for a fresh start. Obviously, seeing the team and how competitive they are and where they are on standards. I know it’d be a motivated group that I’ll be joining. It kind of goes hand-in-hand with the way I play. It’s a lot of motivation and I have a chip on my shoulder,” Stecher said following Monday’s practice.
