It was an eventful morning skate ahead of the final regular season game for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but it’s getting difficult not to look ahead to the playoffs.
William Nylander and Calle Jarnkrok got some individual work in before the morning skate officially started, but quickly left once the formal session began. Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner did not attend the skate, but will play Thursday against the Detroit Red Wings.
McCabe, Ekman-Larsson, Kampf participate in morning skate, will not play vs. Red Wings
Jake McCabe, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and David Kampf were all participants in Thursday’s morning skate, but will not play against the Red Wings.
Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said he’s confident all three players will be available for Game 1 of the playoffs against the Ottawa Senators. McCabe and Kampf have been out of the lineup since April 2, while Ekman-Larsson last played April 9 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
McCabe and Ekman-Larsson participated in shooting drills, skating and shooting with their regular velocity throughout the session.
Max Pacioretty and Jani Hakanpaa were also participants in Thursday’s skate but it doesn’t appear either player will be available for Game 1 of the playoffs. Pacioretty hasn’t played since February 8 and may be the odd man out for the postseason among the forward corps.
Hakanpaa has only played in two games this season, and at this juncture, it appears unlikely he’ll be able to return this year, especially with McCabe and Ekman-Larsson slated to return imminently.
Thursday’s game will be a matter of managing minutes, something that Berube is keenly aware of, with the playoffs just around the corner.
