Before embarking on a five-game road trip, the Toronto Maple Leafs held an eventful practice at the Ford Performance Centre.
Auston Matthews, Matthew Knies and Nicolas Roy all skated in grey extra uniforms. Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube confirmed that Matthews, Knies and Roy’s status are still to be determined for Wednesday’s game against the Blue Jackets.
“Knies, Matthews and Roy all practised today. Looked good, finished practice but still have to see about tomorrow so that’s where they’re at,” Berube said. “But it was good that they were out there & finished practice and went through all the drills.”
Matthews led the stretch at the end of practice, where Berube instructed ‘the glass is half-full, not half-empty’ to his team.
“That’s the way you got to look at things,” Berube said. “The glass is half full. We got an opportunity to go in here tomorrow and get two points and that’s got to be our focus and then we’ll go from there to the next game.”
Easton Cowan was reunited with John Tavares and William Nylander on the top line, while Max Domi centred a second line featuring Nick Robertson and Calle Jarnkrok on the wings. Jacob Quillan appears that he’ll draw back into the lineup, taking rushes with Dakota Joshua and Matias Maccelli, while Sammy Blais alternated on the left wing.
Steven Lorentz, Scott Laughton and Bobby McMann formed the fourth line during Tuesday’s practice.
Jake McCabe will return to the lineup Wednesday. McCabe took a puck to the face during Saturday’s loss to the Montreal Canadiens and did not return. Berube said that he’s using McCabe and Simon Benoit as his shutdown pairing this year, and the veteran defenceman spoke about the aftermath of getting hit by the puck.
“That happens quite a bit, honestly,” McCabe said. “Puck ramps up your stick. This one, my face just blew up right away. They just wanted to make sure there’s no fracture, which there’s not. Got lucky, I guess, on that one.”
Joseph Woll will likely start for the fifth consecutive game. Woll was pulled during the second period of Saturday’s game, where he was the only player that should’ve been exempt from criticism, as the Maple Leafs capitulated against the Canadiens’ odd-man rushes.
“He was so pissed off at me for pulling him the other night, but I like that. He wanted to be there and fight, and that’s good,” Berube said of Woll.
