Jim Morrison, who was the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ second-oldest living alumnus, has passed away at the age of 94, the team announced on Tuesday morning.
Morrison, a defenceman who hailed from Montreal, Quebec, spent six-and-a-half years as a Maple Leaf between 1952 and 1958, tallying 23 goals and 88 assists in that time, and finished his career with 47 goals and 191 assists in 704 games. He had minor stints with the Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, and after a lengthy stint in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Pittsburgh Penguins. Although he never won a Stanley Cup in his career, he put together a decorated career for the Maple Leafs and also took home the Eddie Shore award for the AHL’s most outstanding defenceman in 1965-66 as a member of the Quebec Aces. He also spent time with the Baltimore Clippers of the same league.
After his playing career wrapped up in 1973, Morrison briefly took a job as head coach for the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) before coaching the Kingston Canadians (now the Kingston Frontenacs) for seven seasons. He then went into scouting, spending 17 years as a scout for the Boston Bruins before retiring from the game for good.
His son, Dave Morrison, who had an NHL career as a player as well, has been part of the Maple Leafs’ organization for 20 years. He began as an amateur scout in 2005-06 before being promoted to Director of Amateur Scouting in 2006-07. He served in that role until 2015-16 when he assumed a new role as Director of Professional Scouting for three years before being promoted to Director of Player Personnel in 2018-19. He continued in that role until 2023-24 when he became a Senior Advisor for the Maple Leafs, a role that he still owns today.
No cause of death has been announced at the time of filing.
