<p>Not long after word broke that the Toronto Maple Leafs had traded Rasmus Sandin to the Washington Capitals, Frank Seravalli reported that they&#8217;ve acquired Luke Schenn from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a third-round pick&#8230;</p>

<p>The Leafs selected Schenn with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2008 draft and he immediately broke into the league as a 19-year-old. He scored 14 points over 70 games in his first season in the NHL while logging 21:32 per game.</p>
<p>After that impressive debut, Schenn was heralded as the much-needed saviour on Toronto&#8217;s blueline. He struggled to live up to that hype and was ultimately traded a few years later to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for James van Riemsdyk.</p>
<p>Schenn spent parts of four seasons with the Flyers and was traded in January of 2016 to the Los Angeles Kings. After they were eliminated from the playoffs that spring, the Kings let Schenn walk as a free agent and he signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Coyotes.</p>
<p>After a couple of difficult seasons on poor Arizona teams, Schenn signed a one-year deal with the Anaheim Ducks, but wound up spending more time with their AHL affiliate than he did with their big-league club. He was traded mid-season to the Vancouver Canucks. At that point, it looked like Schenn would soon be out of the league.</p>
<p>Since then, he&#8217;s completely revitalized his career. Schenn joined the Tampa Bay Lightning in July of 2019 and was a member of both of their Stanley Cup teams in 2020 and 2021. He then returned to Vancouver in July of 2021 on a two-year deal worth $850k annually.</p>
<p>Now 33 years old, Schenn is putting together one of the strongest seasons of his career. He has 21 points in 55 games for the Canucks, just one shy of his career-high of 22 set in 2010-11 and 2011-12 with Toronto, and he&#8217;s logging an average of 17:11 per game, mostly as the shutdown defender who plays next to the offensively-oriented Quinn Hughes.</p>
<p>The Leafs now feature a very different blueline than they did last week. They&#8217;ve added Jake McCabe, Erik Gustafsson, and Schenn while sending Rasmus Sandin out.</p>
