Deadline week is finally here.
Buckle up.
We kicked off the Monday edition of Leafs Morning Take by dissecting Florida’s pickup of Seth Jones from over the weekend. It was a huge move for them. Naturally, we discussed if/should need to respond. For what it’s worth, we were split on that debate. Any way you slice it, the Panthers are a better team than they were last week. We’ll see what Brad Treliving has up his sleeve this week.
Thanks to Tim Hortons, we recapped Toronto’s rollercoaster weekend, one that featured two more road victories. William Nylander and Matthew Knies led the charge with a combined two goals and an assist. Meantime, Anthony Stolarz was great on Broadway. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Joseph Woll in Pittsburgh. That said, the Leafs found a way to get the two points, and sometimes, that’s all that matters. Furthermore, Max Domi and Conor Timmins each bumped big-time goal scoring slump. Speaking of which, Auston Matthews finally beat a goalie, a goal that moved him ahead of Darryl Sittler into second all-time in Leafs scoring. He’s 30 away from Mats Sundin. Toronto’s won five in a row and eight of nine. They went a perfect 4-0-0 on their road trip. The team deserves a lot of credit. They’re playing well and deserve a deadline boost from their GM. If you recall last year, the story wasn’t quite the same.
Brought to you by Firehouse Subs, we previewed San Jose’s visit to Scotiabank Arena. That’s right, Timothy Liljegren will be making his return. It’s the first of two with San Jose this season. The Leafs are looking to improve to a perfect 5-0-0 on Prime Monday Night Hockey.
The clock continues to tick. With that in mind, Sportsnet NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman will join Carter Hutton and me on the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take to tee up Toronto’s deadline!
