Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday! In case you missed last week’s edition, we’re bringing back a much-beloved series across the Nation Network.
So, without further ado…
On this day in 1986, the @Toronto Maple Leafs took on the @Calgary Flames winning 7-6 in an overtime thriller.

For the Leafs, it was Tom Fergus who scored the winner and led the charge with a two-goal, two-assist night.
“For all that, it was a one-man wrecking crew named Tom Fergus that gave Toronto Maple Leafs a wild 7-6 National Hockey League overtime win at the Saddledome,” penned the Calgary Herald’s Eric Duhatschek. “Fergus scored the winner on a breakaway from the Leafs’ blueline as Jim Peplinski couldn’t control a pass in the offenesive[sic] zone.”
Toronto got goals from Rick Vaive (who scored two), Peter Ihnacak, Miroslav Ihnacak, and Russ Courtnall. Calgary, meanwhile, relied on tally’s from Doug Risebrough, Steve Bozek, Hakan Loob, Gary Suter, Jamie Macoun and Paul Reinhart.
“The Flames started badly in each of the first two period and the Leafs finished badly, which is why the teams were tied 5-5 following 40 minutes of NBA-like action,” Duhatschek wrote. “It took the Leafs less than two minutes to open up a 2-0 lead.”
And for Toronto, they had actually let the Flames back into the game. That’s in thanks having a 3-0 lead eight minutes into the game, then a 5-2 lead halfway through the second frame.
Also chipping in big for the Leafs — beyond Fergus and Vaive — was Greg Terrion, who had a three-assist night including setting up Fergus for the game-winner. ‘
It was all in all a tough year for the Leafs up to that point as the win bumped them to a 17-36-6 record.
