Today in 1963, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Dick Duff potted the fastest two goals from the start of a game in NHL history.

Duff’s goals saw him score twice in the first 1:08 of the game against Detroit Red Wings goaltender Terry Sawchuk in game one of the Stanley Cup finals. Toronto went on to take down the Wings in five games.

He attended Toronto’s  St. Michael’s college, where he led his team in scoring in his final year with 53 points. Duff debuted with the Leafs on March 10, 1955 for the first of three games with the big club.

Duff landed a full-time role with the Leafs in 1955-56 and quickly became a central figure on a rebuilding club.

On Feb. 22, 1964, he was traded in a blcok buster deal along with Arnie Brown, Bill Collins, Bob Nevin and Rod Seiling in exchange for Andy Bathgate and Don McKenney.

He finished his career in Toronto appearing in 582 games scoring 174 goals and 342 points and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
