Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz left Wednesday’s game against the Washington Capitals with a lower-body injury. Stolarz was immediately replaced by Joseph Woll during the first period, two minutes and 34 seconds into the contest. He will not return to the contest, the Leafs confirmed during the first intermission.
Stolarz remained down on the ice for a minute, and eventually left with the assistance of a trainer. He was in visible discomfort while skating off the ice. After making a pad save, Stolarz immediately stayed down on the ice. Here is the play in question:
Stolarz previously suffered an upper-body injury in November, which kept him out of the lineup for almost two months. The veteran goaltender told reporters he was dealing with a nerve issue, and then re-joined the team. Stolarz posted a 10-10-3 record with a .892 save percentage prior to Wednesday’s game. Stolarz also took a puck to the throat during warmups prior to a March 21 game against the Ottawa Senators, but was released from hospital the same night.
Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube is expected to provide an update on Stolarz post-game. It may be wise for the Maple Leafs to shut Stolarz down for the remainder of the season, as the team is already eliminated from playoff contention. Toronto faces the New York Islanders on Thursday, where Woll will be the likely starter. Dennis Hildeby is available to be recalled from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, and showed that he can deliver at the NHL level this season. Artur Akhtyamov is another potential option, but he’s never started an NHL game.
Stolarz has battled through injuries throughout his career, and the hope is that he didn’t suffer a season-ending ailment. As the Maple Leafs enter a period of transition, it’s possible that Stolarz could be moved in the offseason, while Woll and Hildeby lead the team into the future.
