Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Brandon Carlo has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to November 13, the team announced Monday.
Jacob Quillan has been called up from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
Carlo was held out of Saturday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks with a lower-body injury, after not participating in Friday’s practice due to maintenance. It’s unclear at the time of this filing when Carlo suffered the injury.
Toronto is already without Chris Tanev, who remains on injured reserve indefinitely. Auston Matthews and Scott Laughton are also on injured reserve and the Maple Leafs’ depth is being tested, amid a five-game losing streak in November.
Troy Stecher was claimed off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers on November 15 and joined the team on the road. Stecher is a likely option to join the Maple Leafs’ defence corps ahead of Tuesday’s game against the St. Louis Blues, as a mobile right-handed option that offers a different look.
Quillan recorded two goals and 14 points in 14 games with the Marlies this season. The 23-year-old played one game for the Maple Leafs last season, and could fill in a bottom-six role after an impressive training camp.
Carlo recorded two assists in 18 games for the Maple Leafs this season. The 28-year-old has been off to a slow start relative to his own standards, struggling to build off continuity developed with Morgan Rielly over the past year. Toronto will be forced to adapt without Tanev and Carlo, allowing the second-most goals in the NHL prior to Monday’s games.
Acquired from the Boston Bruins in exchange for Fraser Minten and a 2026 first-round pick (top-five protected), Carlo was expected to help shore up a Maple Leafs’ defence corps, on a team primed for contention, but the team was eliminated in seven games by the Florida Panthers.
It’ll be compelling to see who takes over for Carlo in the lineup, as the Maple Leafs are set to practice Monday at the Ford Performance Centre.
