Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment fired Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving on Monday, the organization announced in a release.
“Throughout the course of this season, there has been deep analysis into both the current state of the Maple Leafs organization and the direction needed to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering a Stanley Cup championship to the city,” MLSE CEO Keith Pelley said in a statement. “Brad Treliving is a man that we all have deep respect and appreciation for, both as a hockey executive and as a person, but it was determined that the club must chart a new course under different leadership. The organization is grateful for all that Brad has contributed in his nearly three years with the Maple Leafs and we wish him and his family the very best.”
Toronto hired Treliving on May 31, 2023. Treliving was the organization’s first choice, after then-president Brendan Shanahan stated that the incoming general manager would require previous experience. During Treliving’s tenure, the Maple Leafs posted a 139-92-27 record.
Treliving was tasked with taking a talented, but underperforming Maple Leafs team over the top during the postseason. Although the Maple Leafs advanced to the second round of the 2025 Playoffs before losing in seven games to the Florida Panthers, the Maple Leafs took a massive step back this year. With the team certain to miss the playoffs for the first time in a decade, Pelley and the MLSE board found it untenable to keep Treliving on for the remainder of the season.
This is the seismic change that the Maple Leafs needed to make, in order to alter the direction of the franchise. Although he’s safe at the time of this filing, head coach Craig Berube could be the next major pillar of the organization dismissed, following a disastrous 2025-26 campaign.
The Leafs Nation will update this story with more details.
