Don’t look now, but the Toronto Maple Leafs are officially on a three-game winning streak.
On Thursday night, the team wrapped up a six-game road trip with a 5-1 defeat of the Carolina Hurricanes. It was another complete effort, with the team finally looking like they’re finding their footing after a sluggish start to the season.
Speaking after the game, Matthew Knies shared what went right for the Leafs in their victory over the Hurricanes.
“From top to bottom I think everyone was doing a great job,” Knies said. “A lot of key blocks, good special teams. Yeah, I think everyone played well.”
It was a big night for Knies, who scored one of his nicest goals of the year so far, battling his way in and burying it midway through the second to put the Leafs up 3-1. After the game, he recounted how he saw that one go down.
“Yeah I just got a break, he lost a twig there,” Knies said. “So I just tried to dip my shoulder, create some space, and find the back of the net.”
Wrapping up a long stretch away from home on Thursday, the Maple Leafs are now set to return to Toronto to face the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. The longtime rivals last faced off at the start of Toronto’s road trip two weeks ago, with Montreal taking that contest 5-2. Since then, the Leafs have gone 4-1-0, and will look to carry the swagger from the strong tail end of the road trip, capped off by Thursday night’s win, into the weekend.
“We needed this,” he said. “We needed energy and we’re just gonna try to bring that home. I think we have a tendency to be flat at home, but we’re gonna come Saturday and get some payback to these guys from Montreal.”
This Saturday is the start of a five-game homestand for the Maple Leafs. While they have posted a decent 8-4-3 record at Scotiabank Arena this season, it’s clear from his comments that Knies takes losses in Toronto to heart. Coming home with a string of wins to their name, the Maple Leafs now have a chance to turn the season around and re-write the narrative of their year.
