Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson was absent from Tuesday’s morning skate. Ekman-Larsson is anticipating the birth of his child, and was excused from Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Wild. He is a game-time decision.
Simon Benoit and Troy Stecher operated as Toronto’s third defence pair in Ekman-Larsson’s absence.
Joseph Woll is the projected starter for Tuesday’s game against the New York Islanders. Woll is coming off a 31-save performance against the Buffalo Sabres, in a 3-2 shootout loss. The 27-year-old has recorded a .906 save percentage and 14-11-5 record in 31 appearances this season. This will be Woll’s fourth start in five games, as he’s clearly assumed the No. 1 role for the Maple Leafs this season.
Bo Groulx will continue to operate as Toronto’s third-line centre. Groulx scored twice during Sunday’s victory over the Minnesota Wild, and has recorded three goals in four games with the Maple Leafs this season. Dakota Joshua and Nick Robertson will join Groulx on the third line.
John Tavares will centre Toronto’s first line, with Matias Maccelli and William Nylander on the wings. Max Domi will centre Matthew Knies and Easton Cowan, while Jacob Quillan headlines the fourth line with Steven Lorentz and Calle Jarnkrok.
Toronto sent Michael Pezzetta and Henry Thrun to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies on Tuesday. Pezzetta did not record a point in two games, but fought one second into his Maple Leafs debut, during Thursday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks.
All eyes are on Islanders rookie phenom Matthew Schaefer, and John Tavares spoke about the 18-year-old prodigy after the morning skate.
“It’s pretty remarkable. He’s doing things only a handful of players have done. It’s extremely impressive. He’s not only a franchise player, but he’s put himself in the conversation of a generational type of talent. To be 18 years old and make the contributions he’s made for them, and how he’s played has been remarkable. We know the challenge he presents. He played extremely well the last time we played against him.”
