Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Tverberg will make his NHL debut Monday against the Dallas Stars.
Tverberg recorded 14 goals and 32 points in 61 games with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. The 24-year-old was selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Maple Leafs.
“He’s got speed, he’s a tenacious player,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said of Tverberg, following Monday’s morning skate. “His speed and tenacity is what drives him more than anything.”
Tverberg skated on the fourth line with Jacob Quillan and Calle Jarnkrok during line rushes Monday.
“Growing up here, especially watching them my whole life, it’s going to mean a lot,” Tverberg said of his debut. “A lot of hard work. Had to go through some injuries. A lot of hardships but, in the end, it will feel pretty good tonight.”
Tverberg played his minor hockey with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens of the Greater Toronto Hockey League, then joined the Jr. Canadiens Ontario Junior Hockey League program, before eventually moving to the University of Connecticut.
Artur Akhtyamov will start Monday’s game. Akhtyamov was forced into a 39-save performance against the New York Islanders on Thursday, during his first NHL start.
Morgan Rielly will play his 950th game on Monday. Rielly is the longest-tenured member of the Maple Leafs and could be approached to consider a trade this summer. It could potentially serve as Rielly’s final home game with the Leafs, and he’s certainly thought about the notion, while wanting to stay in Toronto.
“It’s an outstanding place to play and a great place to live. This organization means a lot to a lot of people so to be a part of it is an honour and I don’t believe that’s lost on anyone in here,” Rielly said Monday.
