Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner reached the 100-point mark for the first time in his career, after scoring in the third period against the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.
Marner collected a spinning feed from Auston Matthews and made no mistake, recording his 27th goal of the campaign.
Marner is the fourth player in Maple Leafs history to record 100 points in a season, joining Darryl Sittler, Doug Gilmour and Auston Matthews. Sittler, Gilmour and Matthews all reached the feat twice in their careers.
“You know, those accomplishments don’t happen by yourself,” Marner said.
“Credit to a lot of guys in that locker room that have helped me out and supported me through this year and have made some unbelievable plays for me and have put in my passes,” Marner said post-game via Sportsnet’s Luke Fox. “So, I think the really cool thing is just the excitement from the guys for that point — and seeing their excitement for me.”
It’s a fitting accomplishment for Marner, who has been the Maple Leafs’ MVP this season and elevated his game while playing in all situations. Marner was named the Maple Leafs’ nominee for the King Clancy Trophy, and he’s been in top form throughout the 2024-25 season where he’s been asked to carry the bulk of the offence for large stretches. It was a banner night overall for the Maple Leafs, as Auston Matthews recorded his 400th career goal later in the third period, becoming the sixth-fastest player in NHL history to reach the milestone.
Toronto captured the Atlantic Division for the first time as a result of the victory, and will face the Ottawa Senators in the first round of the playoffs. It is the Maple Leafs’ first division title during an 82-campaign since the 1999-2000 season.
Marner is in the middle of a tour-de-force campaign and can look ahead to the playoffs as his sole focus, during a year that could potentially define his career.
