The Toronto Maple Leafs announced their training camp roster on Wednesday, September 18 with practices set to begin on Thursday, September 19 before preseason kicks off on Sunday, September 22.
The Leafs have a wealth of players competing for roster spots, between those already signed to NHL deals and those on professional tryouts (PTOs), with a separate wealth of players just looking to be noticed by the organization in hopes of a future call-up or contract. Although the full roster was announced this morning, general manager Brad Treliving opened up his media availability providing updates on a couple of players who will miss the start of training camp with various injuries.
While what exactly happened to Connor Dewar is unknown, it’s safe to assume he suffered the injury at some point during the first round series against the Boston Bruins. It was announced in early May that he was set to undergo shoulder surgery and was expected to be ready for training camp, but it appears now that he’ll miss at least the opening of camp. It hasn’t been revealed whether or not he’ll be ready to go for the start of the season, but it’s safe to assume he should be recovered by then – it will just be a matter of getting him up to game speed before putting him in the lineup.
Fraser Minten suffered his high-ankle sprain in the Leafs’ second game of their prospect showdown against the Montreal Canadiens after defenceman and 2023 fifth-overall pick David Reinbacher sent him feet-first into the boards with a hit. Minten got up gingerly and skated to the bench before it was announced he would not return from the game, and this is the first update on his status since. Although Minten made the team out of camp after an impressive preseason last year, it’s expected that he’ll start this season in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies due to the amount of depth the Leafs have competing for roster spots and the ability to assign him to the AHL.
Ben Danford, meanwhile, was a victim of friendly fire in the days leading up to the Maple Leafs’ prospect showdown in Montreal. Development camp invite Marshall Finnie laid a big hit on the Leafs’ first round pick (31st overall) in 2024 resulting in the concussion and him missing both games of the showdown. Whether he’ll appear at training camp at all is unknown at this point, but if anything, he only would have been there to spend some time around the big club before heading back to the OHL for another season with the Oshawa Generals.
The Maple Leafs kick off preseason on Sunday against the Ottawa Senators.
