Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll met with reporters for the first time, since taking a leave of absence from the team on September 23.
Woll has been skating with the team since October 24, and is working his way back into game shape. The 27-year-old prepared an opening statement, before taking questions from media at the Ford Performance Centre on Friday.
I was going to say a few things just before we get started. I have a few thank yous. I want to make sure I say, namely to the Leafs organization and starting with Brad (Treliving) and working all the way down for all the support they’ve given me and my family for the last bit.
I’ve really been blown away at how much support I’ve received and with that, a big thank you to my teammates as well and I’ve expressed that to them, just for all the support they’ve given. And lastly, I want to thank you guys. I know I asked for privacy and you guys (Leafs media) have granted me that, so I really appreciate that as well.
As we move forward now, I’ve kind of decided that all I’m going to say about my time away is that I’m disappointed to have missed time and I’m very happy to be back. So I’d really like all the focus to be on my job to do here and I don’t want to create any distractions for myself or for the team.
I think there’s enough here to focus on. All I ask is that you guys respect that and if down the road I am interested and think it’d be beneficial to talk about, I’ll initiate that.
Anthony Stolarz is projected to start Saturday’s game against the Boston Bruins. Stolarz has taken on the majority of the workload in Woll’s absence. Both goaltenders were full participants in Friday’s practice, while Cayden Primeau joined the main group on the bench, after working through an individual session. After the practice concluded, Primeau was placed on waivers.
A significant portion of Friday’s practice was spent working on the power play. Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Matthew Knies, William Nylander and Oliver Ekman-Larsson comprised the first group, while Nicolas Roy, Max Domi, Matias Maccelli, Nick Robertson and Morgan Rielly made up the second group. Toronto ranks first in 5-on-5 goals, but the power play has struggled at a 11.8 percent clip, the 30th-best total in the NHL.
“Well, I’m not making excuses,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said of the contrast. “We get one power play a game, maybe two. I mean, that’s a little bit of a problem for sure. Now, in saying that we got to do a better job of executing on our power play with the chances we have. And for me, we haven’t executed well enough. And I think that’s really what it boils down to. There’s been plays that we’ve had in tight or good chances. We miss a net. We didn’t execute well enough.”
