The Toronto Maple Leafs took to the ice for practice on Monday morning prior to hosting the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night, and they might have a different look both on offence and on the back end.

Arguably the biggest headline was the return of Joseph Woll, who missed much of preseason and the first few weeks of the season due to what the team called a personal matter. He had been skating every other day while he was off but will likely need some extra time to get caught up from a conditioning standpoint, so the idea is that he’s likely going to get his feet under him and could make a start with the Toronto Marlies to get him back into game form.

Due to his placement on long-term injured reserve, he is eligible to return on November 1 when the Leafs face the Philadelphia Flyers. That’s not his guaranteed return date and other factors such as the state of the team, matchups, and how Anthony Stolarz is feeling will go into when he makes his debut. Still, it’s a positive sign to see him officially back with the team and skating in hopes he can return to the team as soon as possible.

William Nylander, who was hurt near the end of Friday night’s game against the Buffalo Sabres and missed Saturday’s rematch at home, was a full participant in practice on Monday. It’s not a guarantee that he’ll play on Tuesday night, but head coach Craig Berube says that it’s a positive sign that he was on the ice until the end despite not taking regular reps with the forward group.

“I mean, we’ll see tomorrow,” Berube said via TSN’s Mark Masters on Nylander’s potential return to the lineup. “Glad he stayed out there the whole practice & participated, which is good. That’s good news. Obviously he’s getting better so we’ll see where he’s at tomorrow morning.”

Calle Jarnkrok also missed practice with what Berube called a lower body injury, with waiver wire pickup Sammy Blais taking his spot on the fourth line. Nylander, meanwhile, was taking reps on the top line and taking turns with Nick Robertson, so it’s hard to say what the lineup will look like pending everybody’s status on Tuesday night. Robertson acting as a placeholder on the top line indicates that he could come out of the lineup if Nylander’s healthy, but it’s also possible that he stays in and bumps down to the fourth line where Blais was subbing in.

Meanwhile, Scott Laughton and Chris Tanev both put in work prior to practice but didn’t skate with the main group as they both look to return from injury. Laughton is still recovering from a blocked shot at the end of preseason that has kept him out of the lineup since, and Tanev is working his way back after taking a shoulder to the jaw against the New Jersey Devils.

Puckdrop between the Maple Leafs and Flames on Tuesday night is at 6:00 pm eastern time to account for Game 4 of the World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers.
