Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Tyler Hopkins has been traded to the Guelph Storm from the Kingston Frontenacs, the team confirmed Sunday.
Hopkins is heading to the Storm in exchange for Alex MacLean, a 2026 third-round pick from the Saginaw Spirit, a conditional 2027 2nd-round pick from the Kitchener Rangers, a 2027 fifth-round pick from the North Bay Battalion and a 2029 seventh-round pick originally belonging to Guelph.
“I am super excited to be part of the Storm and for the opportunity that is in front of this group,” Hopkins said. “I am looking forward to helping build something special here.”
The 18-year-old was selected 86th overall by the Maple Leafs in the 2025 NHL Draft, and graded out as The Leafs Nation’s sixth-ranked prospect this summer. Hopkins recorded 12 goals and 25 points in 29 games with the Frontenacs, leading the team in scoring.
“Tyler has established himself as an experienced leader; he plays the game at a very high pace and excels in all three zones,” Storm general manager George Burnett said in a release. “We are excited to welcome Tyler and his family to the Storm organization.”
Hopkins made a strong impression on the Maple Leafs during the fall, and was among the team’s best players at the Prospects Showdown.
“My first time at a real NHL training camp, so the biggest thing is I put my best foot forward, everywhere I could. I thought on the ice I had my ups and downs, adjusting to a different speed than junior,” Hopkins said on September 14, following a victory over the Montreal Canadiens’ prospects team.
A prolific scorer at the minor hockey level, Hopkins transformed his game where he projects to be a two-way forward, capable of secondary offence in the NHL. Maple Leafs scouting director Mark Leach spoke positively about his 200-foot-game after Hopkins was drafted. Hopkins said he models his game after Anthony Cirelli and Patrice Bergeron, upon being drafted.
