The Toronto Maple Leafs have assigned forward Bo Groulx to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL), the team announced on Friday morning.
Groulx was recalled following the NHL Trade Deadline after emerging as a top scoring threat with the Marlies in 2025-26. He was signed to a two-year contract last summer and had 27 goals and 50 points in 54 games at the time he was recalled. Following his promotion to the NHL, he proved that he’s worthy of more than a cup of coffee in the NHL, with three goals and five points in nine games as a Leaf.
While the Maple Leafs were clear about wanting to get a look at some of their Marlies players down the stretch of what’s been a lost season, Groulx’s assignment to the Marlies makes sense on paper. He cleared waivers at the start of the season, and due to the nature of his contract, he would have had to clear waivers had the Maple Leafs kept him for ten games in the NHL this season. It’s clear that they don’t want to risk losing not only the Marlies’ top producer ahead of their playoff run, but a player who could be considered for a roster spot next season with a clean slate and a reset of expectations.
Nevertheless, Groulx feels good about how his game has progressed in Toronto, going from one goal and five points in 65 games as a member of the Anaheim Ducks to the same amount of points in 56 fewer games.
“I’m approaching it pretty well,” Groulx said regarding the opportunity he’s been given. “I think with a lot of confidence. I know what I can do at this level and I think I’m showing it right now. Today I had a couple of 2-on-1s on the PK that I’d like to have back. I had a couple of good shifts with Chelly [Matias Maccelli] and DJ [Joshua] in the o-zone, we were fortunate enough to get one.”
The Maple Leafs will continue the home stretch of the season on Saturday when they visit the St. Louis Blues.
