Toronto Maple Leafs forward Scott Laughton left Saturday night’s game against the Boston Bruins with an upper-body injury and will not return. Laughton was ruled out at the start of the third period.
The injury happened with just over five minutes left in the second period after Laughton took a high hit from Bruins defenceman Nikita Zadorov. Bobby McMann took exception to the hit and dropped the gloves with Zadorov following the hit. Zadorov did not receive any sort of discipline on the play, with the two fighting majors being the only penalty minutes to come of the alteraction.
McMann vs Zadorov after the Laughton hit
If Laughton were to miss any time due to this injury, it would be a terrible break for somebody who just returned to the lineup on Wednesday after missing the start of the season following a blocked shot in one of the team’s final preseason games. His return has stabilized the Leafs lineup, sliding back into his regular role as fourth-line centre and allowing the other three lines to fall into place.
Laughton was acquired by the Maple Leafs at the 2024-25 NHL Trade Deadline and never really found his footing offensively, but by the end of the playoff run, he found a home on the fourth line with Steven Lorentz and Calle Jarnkrok and found himself making an impact away from the puck, carrying a prominent role on the penalty kill. He reunited with Lorentz in his return to the lineup with Max Domi on the other wing.
The Maple Leafs will immediately shift their focus to the second game of their back-to-back as they get set to host the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. Laughton’s availability for that game is unknown at this time, but it’s possible the Leafs give him the game off regardless given the quick turnaround. If he’s not available, he’ll look to rehab until their next game on Tuesday when they visit the Boston Bruins.
