On Thursday morning, the Leafs announced that Travis Dermott and Frederik Gauthier were both returned to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
There really isn’t much to the move: the Leafs don’t play next until Tuesday, while the Marlies are in action this Friday and Saturday in a weekend series against Charlotte. It allows the two prospects a chance to return to the farm system with the possibility of coming back to the big club while still seeing game action this weekend.
Dermott seemed to win over the fanbase in his first two nights in the lineup, registering his first career point on a Tyler Bozak goal this past Saturday in a victory over the Canucks. Last night, he was listed as a healthy scratch, which lead some to scratch their own heads wondering what exactly he’d have to do to become an everyday player.
Gauthier, meanwhile, is still leaving many wondering if he’ll ever crack the lineup as a regular player, something he’s been unable to do since being selected 21nd overall in 2013. In 33 career games with the Leafs, he’s registered just four career points while playing mostly on the team’s fourth line. With the Marlies, he’s put up just eight points in 25 games this season.
