WWYDW – If You Love Something, Let it Go?

Jan 28, 2015, 21:24 ESTUpdated:
There’s been a lot of talk – and I mean a lot of talk – about the possibility of Cody Franson being traded. Arguably the Leafs’ best defender this season, Franson becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and the Leafs only have so much cap space available. As in, not nearly enough cap space available for what Franson would and should command on the open market.
I mean, stats be damned, he’s a top four, right-handed defender that stands six foot five inches tall. Those guys make bank.
The Situation

You absolutely cannot let Cody Franson walk for nothing, so there are really only two options. First, and perhaps most likely, you trade him. Second, you make other moves to open up some cap space, and resign him.
So what would you do? If you’re going to trade him, what are you looking for? Feel free to get detailed and offer up some trade proposals… You going to send him to Anaheim for a top prospect, or Dallas for a first round pick?
And if you’re doing to resign him, then what moves would you make to free up that cash money? Does keeping Franson mean moving a Phaneuf-like contract? Is that worth it?
