What a dominant win in Anaheim.
Auston Matthews, who undoubtedly is about to be named an All-Star yet again, continues to be on a different planet. It took 14 shots but the 26-year-old was finally able to solve Lukas Dostal on Wednesday night. That celebration was mint, too.
We kicked off the Thursday edition of Leafs Morning Take by addressing the Bobby McMann hit on Anaheim rookie Pavel Mintyukov. There’s no question it was clear-cut boarding, but having said that, Jay Rosehill wasn’t a fan of Mintyukov turning and putting himself in a vulnerable position. He broke down the hit frame by frame.
Presented by Door Dash, The Appetizer took a deep dive into the 2-1 OT victory. We covered a variety of different topics from Sheldon Keefe electing to go with Martin Jones for both ends of the back-to-back to Nick Robertson being healthy scratched to when the right time could be to play Dennis Hildeby. Our versatility was on full display —that’s for sure.
Meantime, we also discussed All-Star Weekend. Auston Matthews will be there, but who else? William Nylander and Morgan Rielly have staked their claim. Could Mitch Marner be there, too? It will be fascinating to see how it all plays out as the NHL’s best get set to invade Toronto in early February.
After that, thanks to our friends over at BATL Axe, former Leaf and current NHL head coach Craig Berube dropped by. In addition to getting his overall opinion on the Leafs, we discussed his future and what he’s looking to do next. To boot, Rosey even asked if Chief’s ever thought about coaching the Toronto Maple Leafs.
