Jake Muzzin will not be available to the Toronto Maple Leafs when the team visits the Ottawa Senators on Saturday and at home against the New York Islanders on Sunday.
”He was feeling good and played yesterday and I would say things flared up a little bit for him,” Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said following the team’s practice on Friday. “As a result he’s going to take some time here to just settle down a little bit and see how it responds from there.”
Muzzin returned to the lineup on Thursday after he sat out of the team’s 5-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday. One day prior, Keefe indicated that Muzzin wasn’t quite feeling 100 per cent and the most recent injury was unrelated to the two concussions the veteran defenceman had sustained this season.
The 33-year-old has three goals and 11 assists in 45 games this season. He was limited to 15:52 of ice time, despite being situated on the team’s second defence pair alongside TJ Brodie.
With Muzzin out of the lineup, Justin Holl is expected to take his place and skated with Brodie on the second pair at practice on Friday.
The Leafs called up Krisitian Rubins on an emergency basis from the Toronto Marlies to serve as an extra body for the trip to Ottawa.
Erik Kallgren will start in goal for the Maple Leafs against the Senators, although not confirmed it’s expected Jack Campbell will play on Sunday against the Islanders.
Kallgren is 5-3-1 this season with an .899 save percentage.
