At this point in my life, I’ve become the master of these 11AM school day games. The rules are simple – bring something to shield your ears. You gain next to nothing hearing the game on a day like this; mostly because it’s drowned out by screaming children. I listened to music most of the game and I was at peace.
The Toronto Marlies, on the other hand, were not at peace, as they lost this one by a score of three to one.
The Rundown
The Marlies were first to score in this one, getting their only goal just three minutes into the game on the first shot taken by either team. Matt Frattin found himself open at the hashmarks and put all of his weight into a vintage snapshot that blazed past Jonas Gustavsson. However, by the end of the period, Teemu Pulkkinen had tied up the game, beating Christopher Gibson with his 25th goal of the season.
The Game as a whole stayed pretty silent for the next little while. The two teams were evenly matched throughout, and nobody was particularly aggressive, with the exception of a brief 5-on-3 given up by the Marlies late in the second period. But with five minutes to go in the third, Mark Zingerle tapped home the go-ahead goal that wound up being the game winner. Pulkkinen added the empty netter to close off the game in the final minute.
Blue Warrior
Matt Frattin, goal aside, looked flat out dominant in the first period and look a fifth of Toronto’s shots, putting six on net. He hasn’t destroyed the league like many were hoping this year, but this was a very good night on his part.
Notes
- Christopher Gibson had a good outing, stopping 27 of 29 shots. Neither goal could really be held against him, and it’s not like the team gave him a ton of offensive support.
- The line of Carter Ashton, Tyler Biggs, and Troy Bodie is an interesting one, seeing as they’re all physical bodies and the wingers have both been good point getters at the AHL level, but they were on the ice for both of the main goals against.
- Jonas Gustavsson was named the first star of this one, because, well, of course he would be.
- The screaming kids sold out the building, to the tune of a 7851 total attendance.
- Toronto’s next game is against Lake Erie on Friday night.
