Marlies Sign Frederik Gauthier

Continuing their wave of rookie inheritance, the Toronto Marles have signed Frederik Gauther to an Amateur Tryout contract for the remainder of the season.

Who?

Gauthier was Toronto’s first round pick in last year’s draft. Picked 21st overall, the eigtheen year old Laval native played this year with the Rimouski Oceanic, as he did in his draft year. In this time, he picked up 18 goals and 52 points in 54 games, good for fifth on the team in scoring and a similar clip to the year before. He also played 11 games in this year’s QMJHL playoffs, scoring 9 points.

His Role?

Probably none at all. Gauthier is a two way forward that is supposedly good at penalty killing and faceoffs. This means he’ll be competing for minutes with players like Trevor Smith, Sam Carrick, and Jerred Smithson. I don’t see him knocking any of them out of the lineup. However, he’ll get to be evaluated by the strength and conditioning staff, learn a little bit about the system, and how things work on a team that he’ll probably be playing on when he turns 20.
