The World Juniors are still a week away, but that didn’t stop Team Canada’s Leafs prospects from putting themselves on the scoreboard. In a 7-1 rout of Belarus, first round pick and TLN’s preseason #1 prospect Mitch Marner picked up a goal while second-rounder Travis Dermott added a goal and two assists.

Dermott’s goal came during a whirlwind first period, where Canada scored as many goals as Belarus took shots. This one, instigated by a fantastic feed by Arizona prospect Dylan Strome, was the fourth of the period, scored fourteen minutes in at even strength. Dermott had a secondary assist on Brendan Perlini’s goal late in the third period, but his most important helper came on Marner’s goal.

This goal came long after the matchup was in doubt, and was the only successful tally during Canda’s five powerplays. While both still have a ways to go until they’re full-time NHLers, it’s nice to see what could eventually be with a little given patience.
Canada’s next exhibition game will take place against the Czech Republic on Sunday.
