The Olympic men’s hockey tournament was presented both as an opportunity and a referendum for Auston Matthews. Matthews was named captain of the United States shortly before the tournament began, tasked with leading his country to their first gold medal in the men’s event since 1980. After fighting through a lingering upper-body injury for the better part of two years, the Olympics were posed both as an opportunity for Matthews to reclaim his status as one of the world’s best players, and a larger window into his wherewithal to show up on the largest stages.
With the preliminary round wrapped up, Matthews has quickly established himself as the United States’ best player. Matthews was tied for fifth at the end of the preliminary round, recording three goals and five points in three games. The 28-year-old is dominating in all facets of the game, and he’s showing up outside of the scoresheet as well.
Mike Kelly of the NHL Network tracked Matthews’ stats, where the Maple Leafs’ captain ranks seventh in puck battle wins, third in slot shots, eighth in slot passes and first in expected goals. Matthews is using the totality of his frame, speed, size and defensive instincts to take over games for the United States, while creating at an elite level for wingers Jake Guentzel and Matt Boldy.
“He’s been great all tournament. You guys put a lot of heat on him for no reason,” Guentzel said about Matthews after Sunday’s 5-1 victory over Germany. “He’s just an unbelievable player and plays in all situations.”
Matthews has been skating with greater lateral quick and explosion after Christmas, tendencies that his Maple Leafs teammates took notice of through January. During the opening month and change of the 2026 calendar year, Matthews has re-emerged as one of the NHL’s premier goal-scorers at 5-on-5, and these qualities certainly have translated to the international stage, through three games.
It’ll be compelling to see if Matthews can continue this form throughout the elimination round, squaring off against William Nylander and Sweden on Wednesday. Canada has emerged as the favourite with a plus-17 goal differential through the preliminary round, but the United States are the likeliest team to upstage the defending 4 Nations Face-Off champion. Connor McDavid has been the tournament’s best player, but Matthews hasn’t been far off the pace, and his excellent tournament to date resumes Wednesday, another step towards an elusive gold medal.
