The Toronto Maple Leafs bolstered their crease on Day 1 of free agency, signing Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year contract worth $7 million annually.
Bobrovsky, who will be 38 by the time the season starts, is coming off a down-year with the Panthers, with a record of 27-23-1 to go along with a save percentage (SV%) of .877 and a goals-against average (GAA) of 3.07 in 52 games. To absolve Bobrovsky of the entirety of the blame, the Panthers in general suffered a bad Cup hangover and had multiple injuries throughout the season.
This move comes after the Maple Leafs traded Joseph Woll to the Philadelphia Flyers for a draft pick and defenceman Emil Andrae. With Anthony Stolarz still under contract, the Maple Leafs now have the same tandem that won the Panthers the Cup in 2023-24. This obviously played a factor, but his durability along with the fact that he could serve as a mentor to Artur Akhtyamov down the line are both big parts of it, too.
The Maple Leafs’ goaltending situation remains in limbo, with Dennis Hildeby past the point of being able to go to the American Hockey League (AHL) without waivers. Hildeby was ironically Toronto’s best goaltender in 2025-26 and legitimately proved that he’s capable of being an NHL goaltender, so it will be interesting to see if John Chayka will be willing to risk running Hildeby through waivers or if he’s going to get ahead of the pack and trade him for a pick to get some value back.
Either way, Chayka identified Akhtyamov’s performance as something that’s caught their attention, and adding Bobrovsky on a three-year deal, timed perfectly for when Gavin McKenna’s entry-level contract will expire, is a savvy bit of business.
The Maple Leafs are clearly invested in the next two years, before Auston Matthews’ deal is set to expire, and whatever you make of Bobrosvky’s season last year, he’s a well-established star goaltender in the league who will stabilize the crease and give them up to 60 games if they need it.
