Leafs fail to ignite belief in pivotal moment: Leafs Morning Take

It took 33 days, but the Leafs have finally named Brad Treliving’s successors.
On Sunday, Toronto officially hired John Chayka as general manager and Mats Sundin as Senior Executive Advisor.
Suffice it to say, there was no shortage of talking points on the Monday edition of Leafs Morning Take.
Let’s call it what it is: this move is already being viewed by some as a cost-saving measure — a bit of a dumpster dive, if you will. When even parts of the analytics community are questioning an analytics-driven hire, you know it’s a polarizing decision. That said, we’ve also made it clear we’ll give Chayka the benefit of the doubt to prove he can make this work.
Still, this was a moment that called for clarity and unity, and it’s fair to question whether this move provides either for a fan base craving direction and accountability. Ultimately, you can’t help but wonder what Chayka said to land the job — what sold Keith Pelley? And how involved will Pelley be moving forward? It’s tough to fully back him right now, especially after his widely criticized press conference a month ago.
Naturally, we also discussed what we want to hear from this new regime: What’s the plan? What’s the timeline? What’s the identity?
Meanwhile, Darren Dreger hinted Monday morning on TSN Radio that Craig Berube is likely to return. If that’s the case, it’s hard to believe Chayka had much say in that decision. Whether it’s now or sometime next season, Berube’s long-term future feels uncertain at best. The team showed signs of tuning him out at times this year, and it wasn’t pretty.
And then there’s Sundin — what does his day-to-day actually look like? The title is vague, and it’s a bit odd to think that Chayka has final say while a franchise icon like Sundin sits in an advisory role.
In the meantime, it’ll be fascinating to see what direction this team actually takes. Right now, it sounds like a rebuild is off the table. Is that the right call? Only time will tell — but that’s been Keith Pelley’s stance from the very start of this process. Once again, though, it feels like the organization may be a bit tone-deaf when it comes to reading the market.
Tuesday’s show is shaping up to be a big one. We’ll recap the introductory press conference, look ahead to a massive draft lottery, and welcome Bryan Hayes to break it all down.
