Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies scored one of the goals of the season during Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Knies emerged with a breakaway as the clock was expiring during the second frame, picking off an errant pass from Penguins defenceman Erik Karlsson. He raced away all alone and got a shot off before getting to the hashmarks, wiring it past Penguing goaltender Joel Blomqvist with 0.1 seconds remaining.
You can understand why the Penguins may have become complacent, but it’s an outstanding play from Knies, to turn defensive contributions into instant offence, along with the presence of mind required to get the shot off before the clock expired. It was Knies’ 23rd goal of the season and he’s become a breakout star for the Maple Leafs. Knies previously said this week that he wants to remain with the Maple Leafs entering restricted free agency this summer, and believes his contract will be handled this summer.
“I’m new to [contract negotiations], but I can’t say I’ve thought about it too much,” Knies told Daily Faceoff’s Jonny Lazarus. “There’s not many games left until the playoffs. I think that’s something that’s going to get figured out in the summer, and that’s when I can put more thought into it.”
It was a frantic game Sunday, as the Maple Leafs raced out to a 2-0 lead, before surrendering three consecutive goals to close out the first period. Auston Matthews tied the game during the second frame, Bryan Rust restored the lead for the Penguins, before John Tavares tied the game in the final minute. Knies’ goal provided the Maple Leafs’ with a 5-4 lead, Penguins forward Rickard Rakell scored his second goal of the contest 10 seconds into the third period, before William Nylander sealed the victory in overtime.
