Leafs postgame: Honestly we should’ve just gone to bed

What are sports without a little frustration once in awhile?
The Leafs played like garbage tonight and deservedly lost a hockey game by a score that was only kept close by a resurgent Fred Andersen.
At the end of things, it was 3-2 Sharks, but as you’ll see in this fancy chart from corsica.hockey, it never really should have been close.

Pregame
Patrick Marleau returned to a team he played on for 20 years. Tears were shed, O’s were stood, and then the puck was dropped and Patrick Marleau was still a Leaf and not a San Jose Shark.
First period
At one point that seems like so long ago, the Leafs were winning this hockey game.
Who else could you count on?
Well, today? No one, really, but the Leafs ended up coming out for the first period up 1-0.
Second period
No goals from Toronto, but Joe Pavelski did find the back of the net. The broadcast then spoke for about half an hour on how underrated he is, which was a little funny.
The mood shifted from “we got this” to “uh… are the Leafs aware they’re playing tonight? The Leafs had two shots on net in the whole period.
Two. Do we need to say more? They couldn’t do ANYTHING right.
Third period
"A Bullet!!!" Tim Heed gives the @SanJoseSharks the lead!!
The Sharks added an empty netter and… the game was over. 3-1 Sharks.
Until it wasn’t over!
Andreas Borgman chucks the puck onto the net… and they give him the goal!
Until it wasn’t his!
Turns out Kadri got a piece of it. The Leafs score their second of the game in the 59th minute, which usually isn’t a great recipe to win a hockey game and surprise, surprise, it was no different tonight. An ugly third loss in a row.
There’s all sorts of variations of ways you could put the spin on that the Leafs were awful tonight. Of course the one night Andersen plays his heart out this year is the Leafs’ most lacklustre night of the season. Just a blenderfull of bad hockey tonight.
Oh, and the fourth line was non-existent tonight. We would’ve mentioned them earlier, but, yeah, they were bad.
Both Matt Martin and Dominic Moore were on the ice for 0 shot attempts for the Leafs, translating to a bold 0% Corsi.
That’s a new incredible form of awful.
That’s a new incredible form of awful.

Asking the real questions…
where was roman polak's video tribute
Our buddy Steve sums it up best…
We all stayed up later than the Leafs did.
This not so fun stat midway through the third from James Mirtle…
Leafs have been outshot 21-2 since end of first period.
Even President with the solution…
But finally, a little perspective.
We stayed up late, you probably did too, and it wasn’t a ton of fun.
See you tomorrow (but like, Wednesday night) against the Anaheim Ducks. 10 p.m ET puck drop.
