The Leafs took to the ice again Wednesday for their second practice back since this year’s 4 Nations break began, albeit still missing their key players from the 4 Nations Face-Off.
Calle Järnkrok was in a blue jersey again, continuing to skate with the team after returning to practice yesterday, but is still unsure of when he may see game action again.
“I don’t know. I mean, it’s first two practices back with the team,” Jarnkrok said. “I might need a couple practices before I can say anything about that. But it’s fun to be back.”
Järnkrok has yet to make his debut this season after suffering a lower-body injury in the pre-season and undergoing groin and sports hernia surgery in November. The 33-year-old Swede had 21 points in 52 games last season and is on the third year of a four-year, $8.4 million contract signed as a free agent in July 2022. For a team hurting for depth production like the Maple Leafs, the return of Jarnkrok will give them a nice boost without having to sacrifice anything in terms of assets. He scored 20 goals in 2022-23 and had ten goals in those 52 games last season.
Veteran forward Max Pacioretty didn’t skate at practice today after reportedly tweaking something before going out. While Berube said he doesn’t think it’s serious, this may be cause for concern for fans, as Pacioretty has dealt his fair share of injury trouble this season.
Meanwhile, William Nylander has yet to re-join the team following his stint at the 4 Nations with Sweden, who were eliminated Monday despite beating the Americans 2-1 at TD Garden. It is unclear when he will return to practice in Toronto. Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews will meet again in the final match of the tournament Thursday as Canada and the US are set to face off in the championship game in Boston.
Here’s how the Leafs lined up Wednesday.
The Maple Leafs will be back in action on Saturday night when they host the Carolina Hurricanes, while Matthews and Marner will return after duking it out for bragging rights in the 4 Nations final Thursday night.
