The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Monday that they have recalled forward Jacob Quillan from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
This comes after William Nylander reaggravated his lower-body injury on Thursday against the Vegas Golden Knights and was deemed questionable for Monday’s game against the Minnesota Wild. He previously missed six games due to the ailment, originally sustained on December 27 against the Ottawa Senators, and returned to the lineup on January 10 against the Vancouver Canucks.
Quillan is reportedly set to join the Leafs to fill the void left behind by Nylander. He was taking line rushes during the morning skate on the fourth line, centring Steven Lorentz and Calle Jarnkrok.
“I love Quillan’s energy and his speed,” head coach Craig Berube said on December 30th. “He’s a young kid, but he could come in and provide what we need, I think tonight, and going forward. I think he’s getting close to being an NHL player and a full-time one with his ability. I mean, it’s a good opportunity for him tonight.”
Quillan has appeared in three NHL games so far this season and is seeking his first career point. He has been productive at the AHL level, registering eight goals and 27 points in 28 games with the Marlies, including his first career hat trick on January 9th against the Belleville Senators. If Nylander misses any significant time, Quillan could have a serious opportunity in front of him to make a name for himself on the roster.
Quillan signed with the Maple Leafs out of Quinnipiac University in 2024 as an undrafted free agent. He is set to become a restricted free agent this summer as he is in the final year of his entry-level contract.
