The Toronto Maple Leafs began their push towards replenishing their goaltending prospect pool last year by drafting Joseph Woll, and extended that this afternoon by selecting Ian Scott from the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL.

There isn’t really a lot to talk about when it comes to goaltending prospects, at least from a quantitative standpoint. Scott put up a 0.895 save percentage over 50 games with the Raiders in his second WHL season his year, which is far from impressive but not horrible for a draft year. For reference, Penguins double-rookie Phenom Matt Murray was a 0.876 as a 36-game starter in his draft year, and Toronto’s top junior-developed goaltending “prospect” Garret Sparks put up a 0.890 in his draft year over 19 games.

Also worth considering is that Prince Albert was, well, not good. Their 21-44-0-7 record this year was third-last in the league, and they had a goal differential of -95. Scott’s value likely comes in his physical capabilities, as a 6’3 netminder that has room to fill out at 174 pounds, should he choose to do so.

Scott has played for Team Canada at the U17 and U18 levels, winning gold with the U17 squad in 2015/16. He’s a mid-class prospect as far as age goes, being a January 1999 birthday. As such, Scott will likely spend at least two more years in junior before making the jump to the pros.

Scott was ranked as high as 74th by Future Considerations and as low as 109th by McKeens, so it’s safe to say they’ve found a bit of value here. North American Central Scouting had him ranked third among North American goalies, behind Keith Petruzzelli (88th) and Jake Oettinger (26th).
