Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury, head coach Craig Berube confirmed Friday after practice.
Nick Alberga of The Leafs Nation was the first to report the day-to-day timeline.
Knies was previously listed with an upper-body injury after leaving Wednesday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets at the end of the second period. The 22-year-old collided with Blue Jackets forward Kirill Marchenko, before crashing into a linesman on the way down.
Here is a video of the play where Knies suffered the injury:
Knies previously suffered an upper-body injury against the Vegas Golden Knights on November 20, after taking a hit from Zach Whitecloud, and missed two games as a result.
Featuring on the top line alongside Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, Knies is undergoing a breakout season with 18 goals and 31 points in 47 games. He’s become an indispensable part of the Maple Leafs, and the fact that he isn’t expected to miss much time is certainly good news for a team that has battled several injuries throughout the year, while John Tavares and Max Pacioretty remain on injured reserve. Knies has been in tremendous form since Matthews returned to the lineup on January 4 against the Boston Bruins, and has become a staple of Toronto’s top-six.
“It seems like he wins almost every single wall battle,” Maple Leafs forward Steven Lorentz said of Knies to TSN’s Mark Masters, prior to Wednesday’s game. “His body positioning and how he sticks his body into guys, he gains that edge before the battle even happens and then he comes out on top. It’s impressive to see for a guy who’s only 22 years old. It’s fun to watch because you know when Kniesy’s going into a corner he’s a big bowling ball.”
Nick Robertson was promoted to the Matthews-Marner line in Knies’ absence for the third period, as the Maple Leafs lost 5-1 to the Blue Jackets.
