Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner scored the game-winner for Team Canada in a thrilling 4-3 win over Team Sweden, to start the 4 Nations Face-Off.
Marner received a drop pass from Sidney Crosby and wired it past Filip Gustavsson for the game-winner. Crosby was promptly named Canada&#8217;s player of the game, for an excellent showing overall, recording three assists in the winning effort, while moving to 22-0 as Canada&#8217;s captain in all competitions. Marner walked it off with a fist-pump as the Bell Centre erupted in cheers.

&#8220;If you tell 10-year-old Mitch that he scored an overtime goal assisted by Sidney Crosby, a guy he looked up to from day one. That&#8217;s pretty crazy. I&#8217;m sure my family is going to be very excited about that one and it&#8217;s going to be a very cool thing I get to have now,&#8221; Marner said post-game.
Marner was <a href="https://theleafsnation.com/news/how-mitch-marner-relationship-jon-cooper-could-inform-canada-tactical-options">placed on a line alongside Connor McDavid and Sam Reinhart</a>, and couldn&#8217;t convert on a series of chances created by McDavid throughout the contest. It&#8217;s all academic now, as Marner&#8217;s goal will surely be remembered as one of the moments of the tournament. He was stellar defensively as well, with two shots blocked and a takeaway in all situations.
After the game, Marner couldn&#8217;t recall his favourite goal of his career on the spot, before choosing his first NHL goal. We&#8217;ll bet that this goal may register as one of his best memories.
It was a strange night overall for the Maple Leafs, as Auston Matthews and William Nylander were <a href="https://theleafsnation.com/news/auston-matthews-william-nylander-booed-4-nations-faceoff-opener">met with boos prior to the game</a>, but Marner was exempt, as a member of <a href="https://theleafsnation.com/news/team-canada-preview-mitch-marner-help-canada-reclaim-top-hockey-nation">Team Canada</a>.
&#8220;I didn&#8217;t think him or Willy would get a lot of love from this fan base out here. It&#8217;s usually how it is when we come in this building to play the Habs, it isn&#8217;t too surprising.&#8221;
This is an exceptional development for Marner. He&#8217;s been the Maple Leafs&#8217; best player through the 2024-25 campaign, he&#8217;s due for an extension and while a best-on-best international tournament is not the same as the NHL, he can erase a narrative about his performances in the clutch with a stellar showing for Canada.

Marner and Team Canada resume its schedule Saturday against the United States — where The Leafs Nation staff will be watching the game at Greta! It&#8217;s an excellent start to the tournament for Marner, who could excel in a first-line role throughout the event.
