Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner scored the game-winner for Team Canada in a thrilling 4-3 win over Team Sweden, to start the 4 Nations Face-Off.
Marner received a drop pass from Sidney Crosby and wired it past Filip Gustavsson for the game-winner. Crosby was promptly named Canada’s player of the game, for an excellent showing overall, recording three assists in the winning effort, while moving to 22-0 as Canada’s captain in all competitions. Marner walked it off with a fist-pump as the Bell Centre erupted in cheers.
Here is a video of Marner’s goal:
“If you tell 10-year-old Mitch that he scored an overtime goal assisted by Sidney Crosby, a guy he looked up to from day one. That’s pretty crazy. I’m sure my family is going to be very excited about that one and it’s going to be a very cool thing I get to have now,” Marner said post-game.
Marner was placed on a line alongside Connor McDavid and Sam Reinhart, and couldn’t convert on a series of chances created by McDavid throughout the contest. It’s all academic now, as Marner’s goal will surely be remembered as one of the moments of the tournament. He was stellar defensively as well, with two shots blocked and a takeaway in all situations.
After the game, Marner couldn’t recall his favourite goal of his career on the spot, before choosing his first NHL goal. We’ll bet that this goal may register as one of his best memories.
It was a strange night overall for the Maple Leafs, as Auston Matthews and William Nylander were met with boos prior to the game, but Marner was exempt, as a member of Team Canada.
“I didn’t think him or Willy would get a lot of love from this fan base out here. It’s usually how it is when we come in this building to play the Habs, it isn’t too surprising.”
This is an exceptional development for Marner. He’s been the Maple Leafs’ best player through the 2024-25 campaign, he’s due for an extension and while a best-on-best international tournament is not the same as the NHL, he can erase a narrative about his performances in the clutch with a stellar showing for Canada.

It’s arguably the biggest goal of Marner’s career, and it’s rare to see a Montreal crowd explode for a Maple Leafs star — perhaps this is the transcendent value of an international competition come to life.
Marner and Team Canada resume its schedule Saturday against the United States — where The Leafs Nation staff will be watching the game at Greta! It’s an excellent start to the tournament for Marner, who could excel in a first-line role throughout the event.
