We’re officially in hour 11 of Auston Matthews watch, as he left the game late in the third period with an apparent upper-body injury. Should have an update coming later this morning, but oh boy, it’s making us nervous.
The Leafs never led in this one against the Isles, and looked dead in the water on many occasions, but when you’re hot, you’re hot.

1-0 Isles (Ryan Pulock goal)

Shea Weber against Germany in 2010, anyone? Okay, not quite, but there’s always a fun time when the reaction isn’t immediately clear on the ice whether the puck went in or not. In-N-Out like the burger chain and it’s the first hockey goal of this game.
Side note: look how much darn room there is between Pulock and… anyone else on the ice? Steph Curry range out here.

2-0 Isles (Mat Barzal goal)

If there’s been one storyline following the Isles this season, it’s been the rise of Mat Barzal. A player you notice just about every time on the ice, his quick thinking and agility were on display here.
Midway through the first, and the Leafs were already fighting a multi-goal deficit.

2-1 Isles (Mitch Marner goal)

That’s ten (10) goals for Mitch Marner in his past 15 games. You can’t expect that pace forever – it’d equate to 54 goals over an 82-game season, but when he’s feeling it, Marner can do no wrong. The amount of goals we’ll be watching on Mitch Marner’s highlight reel that are built by just him hanging out and shooting the puck whenever he wants to. Whoever raised that boy to not always trust your first option, well, they’re a darn smart coach.

2-2 (Morgan Rielly goal)

Cannot confirm whether this is scientific or not, but Morgan Rielly seems to spend more time down below the faceoff circle than any other defenceman on the Leafs and by extension, the league. Leaving things to the third period to get their second goal of the game, the Leafs go the full length of the ice in the matter of a little over five seconds and the Islanders are caught playing catchup. A 2-on-1 with Rielly alongside Connor Brown and that’s hockey baby! Morgan’s sixth of the year.

3-2 Isles (Jordan Eberle goal)

Contrary to the tweet, the goal was not exactly a highlight reel effort. Call “bank” on that one, and the Isles give themselves a “they’re not really gonna do this like that?” lead.

3-3 (Auston Matthews goal)

The clutch gene continues. The best even strength goal scorer in the world. Not the prettiest goal, but hey, the NYI scored a redirect too, so we should be allowed one of our own.
Auston tips in the shot off of Jake Gardiner’s slapper, and that’s goal #28 on the season. That good, that quickly.

4-3 Leafs (Tyler Bozak SO goal)

When you score on the first shot of the shootout and no one else does, well, that’s the winner.
See you tomorrow, as the Buds take on Boston.
