Jack Roslovic signed a two-year contract worth $4 million per season with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 1. Roslovic will inject Toronto’s revamped lineup with some speed and secondary scoring touch. The 29-year-old recorded 21 goals and 36 points with the Edmonton Oilers last season, before registering an assist in six playoff games.
OilersNation managing editor Zach Laing watched Roslovic extensively throughout the 2025-26 campaign. As soon as the Maple Leafs confirmed Roslovic’s two-year contract worth $4 million annually, I knew I had to reach out to Zach for some insight on the polarizing forward. Here is Laing’s scouting report:
Jack Roslovic was a curious player for the Oilers. They pursued him on a multi-year deal last summer, but he declined, only to circle back with the team on a one-year deal. He outperformed the $1.5 million deal with solid depth scoring at five-on-five in the regular season, but come the playoffs, he shrank. Maybe it was a symptom of the Oilers’ struggles as a whole against the Anaheim Ducks, but he had chances he just couldn’t find a way to capitalize on. He drove play at a solid rate for the Oilers, with his overall impacts that of a high-end third-line player, according to HockeyViz, but got a bit unlucky with a 97.0 PDO.
What’s clear from his time in Edmonton is that he needs help defensively from sound players. He spent most of his time on the Oilers’ second line alongside Leon Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin, but they didn’t quite work out together. In fact, when Draisaitl and Podkolzin were away from Roslovic, they scored at a higher rate, generated higher quality chances, and saw their five-on-five goal share jump from 47.6 per cent to 69.2 per cent. That’s not to say I don’t like the deal for the Leafs, but Roslovic is someone who needs help around him.
This is the fascinating part of the equation for the Maple Leafs. Toronto has clearly delineated its top-six forwards (Gavin McKenna, Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Matthew Knies, John Tavares, Easton Cowan) from its bottom-six (Nick Paul, Colton Sissons, Brandon Duhaime, Teddy Blueger) and Roslovic is perhaps the player split between both factions. Roslovic is friends with Auston Matthews, and told reporters during his introductory meeting that he’s stoked to be back with his old friend.
Roslovic also spoke about how his playing style and speed fits into the Maple Leafs’ revamped lineup.
“I think the team plays a highly offensive game. I think they play a complete game. I think, on top of that, the reason why I said high offense is the skill. The skill is there. You know, the talent’s there. And the ability to put the puck in the net is definitely there. So for me, it’s about complementing these guys, being able to find a role and a home. And really just get chemistry and work with my talents to complement and benefit these guys. As much as it is for me to help drive and help push every day to be a huge part of it. So that’s what I’m excited for.”
Roslovic will certainly be a compelling part of Toronto’s mix, with speed, skill and role certainty being emphasized under general manager John Chayka and head coach Jim Hiller. Perhaps Roslovic could open training camp alongside Paul and Cowan, although the Maple Leafs are believed to still be active throughout the offseason. In any event, we’re looking forward to watching Roslovic, while being aware of where his production and value declines, without superior linemates to augment his skill set.
