Ottawa Senators forward Drake Batherson had a night to forget in Game 2 against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
He played over 21 minutes in the contest, recording one shot, four hits, and a block. But it was his minus-2 that reared its ugly head, on a night where Batherson was one of the key reasons the Leafs got two of their goals. It led to a 2-0 series lead for the Blue and White.
Batherson took ownership of his gaffes during a media availability on Wednesday, specifically referencing his giveaway that led to the Max Domi overtime winner.
“You live and you learn. You make a mistake and you learn from it,” he said. “Sometimes it’s the hard way. Obviously cost us the game, so live and you learn. You gotta move on to the next one, but definitely wishing I could have that one back to say the least.”
Batherson was leading a rush into the Leafs end when he sent a blind pass into the middle of the ice that was picked off by Simon Benoit. When he got back into his own end, he showed little resistance to making life difficult for Domi to get in position to fire home the winner.
Senators captain Brady Tkachuk complimented his teammate for taking ownership of the mistake while adding that a moment like that should not be squarely on one person.
“ To be honest with you, it’s, it’s never one person’s fault. Mistakes happen,” Tkachuk said to reporters after the morning skate on Thursday. “Drake’s been unbelievable for this team, unbelievable to get us to where we’re at.  I think it says a lot about his character about putting on himself. But at the end of the day, it’s never on one person. He’s been amazing for us, I know he’s gonna be unreal tonight.”
He may only have one goal so far this series, but Batherson certainly has had his chances in the offensive zone, and he is a player the Leafs will need to keep their eye on as the series progresses. Knowing how fired up he is to make amends for his blunders in Game 2 means that they may have to pay extra attention to him.
“He makes that play nine out of ten times. Just his confidence with the puck, that’s what you want out of a player like him,” forward Tim Stutzle said. “It happens, everybody makes mistakes. We moved on right after the game, I talked to him right after the game. It’s one game, and he’s gonna have a big game tonight.”
Batherson also had the support of his coach, which might be the most important thing considering the circumstances.
“I grabbed Drake last night. You do live and learn first of all, and it can eat you up,” Senators head coach Travis Green added. “Wanna make sure that he doesn’t dwell on it. I think it goes back to a lot of the lessons that we have learned this year. You can’t live in the past. You can learn from the past and live in the present. When you make a mistake that you don’t like that ends up in the back of your net, it doesn’t feel good.”
Game 3 is at the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
