John Chayka had perhaps the busiest week a newly appointed general manager could. After a fiery press conference on Monday and countless questions about his past, his future, and the GM search overall, the Toronto Maple Leafs were given a massive boost by winning the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery and reserving the right to select Gavin McKenna first overall at June’s draft.
While the draft lottery has been dominating most of the headlines over the past few days, the spotlight will also include the futures of both captain Auston Matthews and head coach Craig Berube. Chayka is expected to meet with both over the next couple of days, with TSN’s Pierre LeBrun confirming on Overdrive that Chayka and Berube will meet by the end of the weekend.
“John Chayka is gonna meet with Berube in the next number of days here, I think by the end of the weekend,” LeBrun said on Overdrive. “Again, just to see where the coach and the new GM are in terms of whether they’re on the same page, whether they share a vision of where things need to go moving forward. If I had to handicap that part of it, I think that John Chayka will be comfortable with keeping Craig Berube as his head coach, but that’s just a gut feeling on my part. We’ll have to see how that meeting goes between the two sides.”
Berube’s tenure in Toronto so far has been a tale of two different outcomes. In his first season, he led them to their longest playoff run of the Matthews era, taking the Florida Panthers to seven games in the second round. In his second, the Leafs stumbled out of the gate and never gained composure, finishing fifth-last in the league and missing the playoffs for the first time since Matthews was drafted. LeBrun’s hunch is an interesting one, given that Chayka’s ‘data-centric’ approach doesn’t appear that it would line up with Berube’s dump-and-chase coaching style, but it’s certainly possible that the two could find common ground as they meet.”
