The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Thursday that they have called up goalie Artur Akhtyamov and placed Scott Laughton on injured reserve retroactive to November 8.
The move comes after Anthony Stolarz left Tuesday’s game against the Boston Bruins early due to an upper-body injury. His last two starts saw him get pulled early, with both resulting in Dennis Hildeby having to come in relief to finish the game.
“He was awesome, I put him in a shit situation,” Stolarz said of Hildeby, after getting pulled during Saturday’s 5-3 loss to the Bruins. “He came in, handled it like a good pro, played well, and just tried to give him confidence on the bench. He’s an easy guy to talk to and he talks back to me on the bench, as well, so kudos to him for coming in, playing a solid game and giving us a chance.”
He had been carrying the bulk of the work in the crease to start the season after Joseph Woll took a personal leave of absence at the start of training camp. Woll is in the middle of his conditioning stint with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies and is expected to be back with the Leafs in the near future for his first start of the season. With Stolarz out for this contest, expect Hildeby to get the start while Akhtyamov is the backup for his first taste of NHL action.
Stolarz missed almost two months of action after undergoing a procedure to remove a loose body from his knee in December 2024. He had signed a four-year extension with the team on September 28th that carries an AAV of $3.75 million that kicks in next season.
Laughton has been out since departing Saturday’s game against the Bruins with an upper-body injury stemming from a hit he took from Nikita Zadorov. Bobby McMann took exception to the hit and dropped the gloves with Zadorov following the hit, but no penalty was assessed to Zadorov for the collision.
Laughton was playing in only his second game of the season at the time of the ailment due to missing the first month and change from a separate injury caused by blocking a shot off his foot in a preseason game. His return had stabilized the Leafs’ lineup, sliding back into his regular role as fourth-line centre and allowing the other three lines to fall into place.
It is worth noting that Laughton was seen on the ice doing solo work ahead of Thursday’s morning skate, though it’s not clear how long he will end up being out for this latest setback.
