After a five-game home stand that saw the Toronto Maple Leafs go 0-4-1, getting on the road might just have been what the team needed to get back on track.
Toronto defeated the Calgary Flames 4-2 on Monday night, improving its record to 26-21-9, sitting seven points back of the Boston Bruins for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
William Nylander continued his dominance over the Flames with a three-point effort on Monday night, improving the 29-year-old’s career numbers to 14 goals and 25 assists in 26 career matchups. Nylander picked up one goal and two assists in the victory.
“He’s just so good and so dangerous. His ability to make it seem like the puck is glued to his stick and following him around the ice,” Maple Leafs assistant captain John Tavares said. “That’s what makes great players special is their ability to control the game and let things flow through them.”
Tavares, Nylander and Matias Maccelli’s line accounted for three of the Maple Leafs’ four goals, giving the Flames trouble for most of the game.
“I thought our line was making good plays, staying hard on pucks and doing a pretty good job in the neutral zone for most of the night,” Tavares said. “That allowed us to gain some good puck possession, go forecheck when we had too and use our ability to spread the ice. Obviously, when Willy gets it in space, he’s as dangerous as anybody.”
The win saw goaltender Joseph Woll turn aside 28-of-30 shots, to pick up his second victory in a row and improve to 13-7-4 on the season. Woll has been strong in goal for the majority of the regular season for the Maple Leafs, posting a 2.92 GAA and .910 save percentage.
“I think he’s been pretty good for us all year. It’s a long season, not every night is going to be great and we all go through it individually over the course of a long grind,” Tavares said. “But I think for the most part he’s been really good for us. Obviously, tremendous again today.”
With 26 games left to play, every game is important for the Maple Leafs from here on out as they try to extend their playoff streak to 10 seasons. The Maple Leafs will conclude their four-game west coast road trip on Tuesday night with a matchup against the Edmonton Oilers, a team that once again finds themselves in the fight for the Pacific Division with a record of 28-20-8.
“There hasn’t been that many penalties here the last few games, so hopefully that stays the course because we know how good their power play is and obviously just trying to slow down their big guys as best you can, taking away their time and space,” Tavares said. “We really have to make them earn the areas of the ice that are dangerous. We want to play with the puck, we want to forecheck well and be good through the neutral zone.”
