After the conclusion of the trade deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs will look a little bit different entering Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Toronto traded Nicolas Roy, Bobby McMann and Scott Laughton ahead of Friday’s deadline, creating some greater opportunities for its younger forwards. For the first time in a decade, the Maple Leafs are positioned to miss the playoffs and are charting their new path forward with 19 games remaining.
“Two great guys,” Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews said of Laughton and McMann. “Obviously Laughty fit in right away. He was only here for a year. I think a lot of guys knew him from the Toronto area. Incredible guy. Bobby had a long journey and path to where he is now. Incredible guy, teammate.”
“The three guys that we lost played pretty well for us and did their job for us,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said. “We’re going to miss them for sure. Two of our better penalty killers gone. Bobby is having another good year, scoring goals. That’s the way it goes, when you’re in this situation.”
Oliver Ekman-Larsson was considered a popular trade candidate, but remains with the Maple Leafs after the deadline. Ekman-Larsson reiterated his desire to remain with the Maple Leafs prior to the deadline, and again expanded on his belief in the group, as the team undergoes a state of transition.
“We have some special pieces here. It’s about our mindset pushing forward. Just getting better every day. I like our pieces,” Ekman-Larsson said.
Anthony Stolarz is the projected starter for Saturday’s game. Stolarz is coming off a 44-save performance against the New Jersey Devils, where the Maple Leafs lost in a shootout.
