The Toronto Maple Leafs signed defenceman Hayes Hundley to a three-year, entry-level contract, the team announced Friday.
Hundley recorded six goals and 12 points in 38 games for St. Thomas University of the NCAA. He was named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team for his contributions.
The 20-year-old right shot defenceman previously posted four goals and 16 points in 58 games for the Fargo Force of the USHL in 2024-25. Measuring at 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds, Hundley carries the physical traits that Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has often sought after.
Toronto previously signed defenceman Vincent Borgesi to a two-year, entry-level contract on March 17. Borgesi told reporters that he’s looking to learn from Henry Thrun among others, as he gets acclimated to the organization. It’s clear that the Maple Leafs are looking to stockpile some depth, as the organization begins to consider a retool entering the 2026-27 campaign. Toronto currently does not hold its 2026 first-round pick, and will need to engineer some ways to become younger and more agile, as the balance of power in the Atlantic Division has shifted.
Hundley played his youth hockey with the Ohio Blue Jackets AAA program, before joining the Johnston Tomahawks of the NAHL for the 2024-25 campaign, where he registered three goals and 11 points in 58 games. Throughout his career, Hundley continues to show some offensive growth at every level, and it’ll be compelling to see whether he can provide some secondary scoring from the blue line in the AHL.
It also seems apparent that Hundley has rounded out his frame and is well-equipped for the taxing nature of the professional game.
Here’s what Daily Faceoff prospect expert Steven Ellis tweeted, following the signing:
Aggressive blueliner who gives you little to work with. Doesn’t produce much, but he’s physical and reads plays well. Only spent one year in college, but a bunch of teams showed interest.
