At last, we’ve reached the eve of the NHL Draft.
And without question, business is picking up in Sin City.
LIVE on location once again at Stadium Swim, Daily Faceoff’s Matt Larkin and Steven Ellis co-hosted the Thursday edition of Leafs Morning Take.
We kicked off the show with a bit of a scene setter. There’s expected to be a lot of activity in the NHL over the next week. The Leafs might be at the forefront of it all —depending on what happens with Mitch Marner. Additionally, we touched on the passing of former Leaf Sergei Berezin. He was just 52. The Pat Quinn era was so special. May Sergei rest in peace.
Presented by Greta Bar YYZ, we dissected Brad Treliving’s media availability from Wednesday. As expected, he didn’t show his hand with regards to what he could be up to over the next few days. There so many moving parts to all of this. He had some interesting quotes about Mitch Marner, which to be fair, he didn’t really say much. At this point, it would be better if neither side said much. All in all, it will be fascinating to see how this plays out.
Furthermore, we talked about Jacob Trouba, who weirdly enough, could be on the trade block. The Rangers captain has two years left at $8 million per season. On paper, he’s exactly what the Leafs need and want, so naturally, it’s easy to link him to Toronto. If Trouba does go, it likely would go down over the next few days. Who doesn’t want a physical right-handed shooting defender?

We also hit on Jeff Skinner. It hasn’t happened yet, but the Sabres winger could be bought out. He’s a local product, so obviously, we had to at least discuss the possibility of him ending up in Toronto. All three of us agreed that the Leafs don’t make sense —at least right now. We’ll see what happens over the next few days.
Lastly, Steven, who’s Daily Faceoff’s draft guru, broke down who he thinks the Leafs could target at No. 23. He really likes EJ Emery, a right-handed defender. After nailing the Easton Cowan pick last year, the Leafs have a lot to live up to this year in Round 1.
