The Toronto Maple Leafs lost bodies across the roster on Wednesday night.
Forward Dakota Joshua and defenceman Brandon Carlo both exited the game with injuries and were ruled out for the third period. Leafs PR reported that Joshua suffered an upper-body injury, while Carlo’s ailment was labelled lower-body. Their injuries came after goaltender Anthony Stolarz had already exited the game early in the first with a lower-body injury. He was also ruled out shortly after.
After the game, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube confirmed that Joshua and Carlo will be out for Thursday night’s contest against the New York Islanders. In their place, Berube shared that forward Luke Haymes and defenceman William Villeneuve will be recalled from the Toronto Marlies to make their NHL debuts.
Joshua left the game with around six minutes remaining in the middle frame. He went down the tunnel after taking a hard hit into the boards from former Maple Leaf Rasmus Sandin.
Against the Capitals, Joshua logged 8:30 TOI and registered one shot and two hits. The 29-year-old has 10 goals and 18 points in 54 appearances with the Leafs this season, missing significant time due to a kidney injury. Playing a bottom-six role, he’s averaging 12:19 TOI per game. It’s the third straight season he has missed a large number of games due to injury or illness.
At this point, it’s unclear when Carlo may have suffered an injury, but he did not return for the third period. Carlo missed significant time this season after undergoing foot surgery in early December. Listed as upper body, Wednesday’s injury is likely unrelated. Carlo has 54 total appearances with the Leafs this season, tallying seven assists and logging an average TOI of 19:30.
The Maple Leafs now have four games remaining in the season. They are right back at it on Thursday night, hitting the road to face the New York Islanders. As confirmed by Berube, both Haymes and Villeneuve will join the Leafs to make their NHL debuts against the Islanders. Additionally, goaltender Artur Akhtyamov will be brought up from the Marlies to make his first start and second appearance for the Maple Leafs this season.
