Instant Reaction: Maple Leafs overpay for speed, penalty killing certainty with Colton Sissons

Colton Sissons signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs on a two-year deal worth $4.25 million annually. Sissons will likely slot in as Toronto’s fourth-line centre, where he’s expected to provide speed, toughness and defensive responsibility to the bottom-six.
In a vacuum, Sissons is a solid player, who understands his role inherently. He’s not going to ask to be bumped up the lineup, and he does all the little things well. Unfortunately, the Maple Leafs overpaid for this type of role player. Sissons produces very little offence, generating six goals and 11 points in 66 games with the Vegas Golden Knights. Toronto isn’t asking Sissons to generate a ton of offence, that’s not his role, but it is a slight overpay and a questionable allotment of salary cap space from general manager John Chayka.
Toronto will need to continue to find value in free agency to round out its forward corps. Jack Roslovic signed a two-year deal worth $4 million annually, where he may be a diametric opposite to Sissons. Roslovic is exceptionally fast, scores 20 goals a year, but provides little defensive value, and may have to be shifted over to the right wing, situationally. Teddy Blueger also signed a two-year deal, worth $2.5 million annually with the Maple Leafs.
Earlier in the day, Toronto traded forward Nick Robertson to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 2028 fourth-round pick. Robertson spent his entire career with the Maple Leafs and was extended a qualifying RFA offer, but ultimately was made redundant by Toronto’s new managerial regime.
Toronto also signed goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year deal worth $7 million per season. Bobrovsky is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, two-time Vezina Trophy winner, and one of the greatest goaltenders of his generation. Although the 38-year-old is coming off a down season, he provides the Maple Leafs with durability and certainty, while operating as a ready-made mentor for Artur Akhtyamov and Dennis Hildeby. Bobrovsky is also reunited with Anthony Stolarz, as the duo won a Stanley Cup together with the Panthers in 2024.
